The LS3 6.2L V8 powers C6 Corvette, 5th-gen Camaro SS, Pontiac G8 GT, and 2009-2015 CTS-V. The performance Corvette/Camaro LS3 has no AFM, but the L99 variant (Camaro SS auto) does - and shares the GM 5.3L AFM lifter pattern. Generally one of GM's strongest engines.
Excellent reliability on true LS3 (Corvette, manual Camaro SS). L99 variant in auto Camaro has AFM and shares the same lifter risk as the 5.3L. Stock rocker arm trunnions are the weakest point in tuned applications.
L99 (auto Camaro SS) has Active Fuel Management and shares the GM 5.3L lifter collapse pattern. True LS3 (Corvette, manual Camaro SS, G8 GT, CTS-V) has no AFM and no lifter pattern.
View P0301 Diagnosis →Stock rocker arm trunnion bearings are weak on high-RPM or tuned applications. Aftermarket trunnion upgrade kit ($150) is the standard preventive fix.
View P0301 Diagnosis →Some LS3s burn 1 quart per 2,000-3,000 miles - usually piston ring related. Less common than on the 5.3L. PCV update can sometimes help.
View P0507 Diagnosis →Stuck lifter on cold start is occasionally reported. Often resolves with a fresh oil change to thinner viscosity.

2010-2015 Camaro SS automatic (L99 with AFM). The L99 is essentially a 5.3L-with-AFM behavior pattern in a 6.2L block.
2008-2009 LS3 Corvette (pre-L99, no AFM). 2010-2015 Camaro SS manual (true LS3, no AFM). 2009-2015 CTS-V (LSA supercharged variant - even stronger).
On a true LS3, plan on trunnion upgrade ($150-$300) if you tune, otherwise oil and plugs. On an L99, treat it like the 5.3L - AFM delete is recommended.
If your LS3 is throwing a check engine light, these are the codes most often associated with the problems above. Click any code for full diagnosis steps and typical repair costs.
True LS3 (Corvette, manual Camaro SS, G8 GT, CTS-V) does NOT have AFM. The L99 variant (auto Camaro SS only) has AFM and shares the 5.3L lifter problem.
Manual transmission Camaro SS = LS3 (426 hp, no AFM). Automatic transmission Camaro SS = L99 (400 hp, has AFM). Check your engine code on the door jamb sticker.
Yes - one of GM's most reliable performance engines. 200,000-300,000 miles is common with regular oil changes. Trunnion upgrade is cheap insurance for spirited driving.
2008-2013 Corvette C6, 2010-2015 Camaro SS manual, 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 GT (L76 variant), 2009-2015 Cadillac CTS-V (LSA supercharged variant), 2014-2015 Chevy SS.
For stock daily use: no. For tunes, sustained track use, or any time the cam is changed: yes - $150-$300 in parts saves $3,000 in damage if a stock bearing fails.
200,000-300,000+ miles with regular service. Bottom end is overbuilt - most failures are accessory or trunnion-related, not the main engine.
