📖 What It Does
Adjusts cam timing on the fly. At low RPM, conservative timing gives smooth idle and torque. At high RPM, advanced timing boosts power. At cruise, it can mimic the Atkinson cycle for better economy.
⚙ How It Works
An oil-pressure-driven actuator (cam phaser) rotates the camshaft a few degrees relative to the timing chain. A VVT solenoid, controlled by the ECU, regulates the oil flow to that actuator. Dirty oil or a failed solenoid leaves the cam stuck at one position.
⚠ Symptoms When It Fails
Symptoms include rattling on cold start, P0010-P0017 codes, rough idle, loss of power, and check engine light. The root cause is usually a clogged VVT solenoid screen or low oil pressure from skipped oil changes. See full symptom guide.
💰 Replacement Cost
Solenoid replacement: $150–$500. A VVT solenoid is $50–$200 in parts. Cam phaser repair is much more expensive ($800–$2,500) and labor-heavy. See solenoid cost.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What does VVT actually feel like in driving?
Smooth power across the RPM range with no narrow torque band.
Why does VVT cause cold-start rattle?
When oil drains from the cam phaser overnight, the phaser flops until oil pressure builds. A few seconds of rattle is normal; sustained rattle is not.
Can I fix VVT problems with an oil change?
Sometimes. A fresh full-synthetic oil change has cured many P0011/P0014 codes.
Is VTEC the same as VVT?
VTEC adds cam profile changes (lift and duration), not just timing. So VTEC is a superset of VVT.
What oil should I use for VVT engines?
Always the exact viscosity in the owner manual. Wrong viscosity is the #1 cause of VVT codes.
Will skipping oil changes kill VVT?
Yes. Sludged oil clogs the solenoid screen and starves the phaser of pressure.
