📖 What It Does
Increases air mass entering the engine, delivering more power immediately. Common in muscle cars and high-output trucks where throttle response matters more than peak efficiency.
⚙ How It Works
A pulley on the crankshaft turns a belt that spins the supercharger's internal rotors. Roots-style superchargers push air into the intake in pulses. Twin-screw and centrifugal designs compress air more efficiently. Boost pressure rises with engine RPM since the supercharger is mechanically linked to the crank.
⚠ Symptoms When It Fails
Failures include worn snout bearings, slipping or shredded drive belts, broken couplers, and oil leaks. Symptoms are loss of boost, whining or grinding noises, and the check engine light.
💰 Replacement Cost
Replacement: $3,000–$8,000. A reman supercharger runs $2,000–$4,000 plus 6–12 hours labor. New OEM units (Hellcat, GT500) are far more. See supercharger cost.
