Wiring Short to Voltage
A chafed wire on the starter control circuit has shorted to a 12V source. Inspect harnesses near the engine and behind the dash.

🚫 Is It Safe to Drive?
It depends. The car may not start, or may crank when it should not. Address quickly.
🔧 Step-by-Step Diagnosis
- Pull and swap the starter relay - Most fuse boxes have 3-4 identical relays. Swap the starter relay with another and see if the code changes location.
- Check fuses on the starter circuit - A blown fuse can also throw P0617. Look for the START or IGN fuse in both fuse boxes.
- Inspect relay socket terminals - Spread or burned terminals create high-voltage opens. Clean or replace the socket if discolored.
- Backprobe the relay control wire - With the key in CRANK, the PCM should pull the control wire to ground. If it stays at 12V, the PCM is not commanding the relay.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Will the car start with P0617?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Many vehicles can still crank because the security system uses a parallel path. Worth swapping the relay first.
Is P0617 just a bad starter?
Usually no. P0617 is about the RELAY circuit, not the starter motor. The starter itself rarely throws this code.
Can I drive with this code?
If the engine starts, yes. But it can leave you stranded any time it next decides not to crank.
Will replacing the relay clear the code?
About 50% of the time. Always test the wiring after a relay swap if the code returns.
Is this a security/anti-theft issue?
Not typically. Security codes are usually P0513, P1684, or B-codes, not P0617.
