📋 Quick Facts
A cat-back exhaust replaces piping after the catalytic converter and is one of the lowest-risk performance modifications you can install. It does not touch emissions hardware, the ECU, or the engine itself, so warranty denial is very rare.
Why cat-back is the safest performance mod
A cat-back system starts at the rear flange of the catalytic converter and runs to the tailpipe. Because it does not modify any emissions component, EPA tampering laws (42 U.S.C. § 7522) do not apply. Because the engine does not "see" the change, the ECU does not learn or log anything. Magnuson-Moss protections fully apply.
Where you can still get into trouble
- State noise laws. California Vehicle Code § 27151 caps modified exhausts at 95 dB measured by SAE J1169. Most cat-backs are well under, but straight-pipe builds can fail.
- Header swap, not cat-back. A long-tube header that includes the catalyst is a different product. If you replace the cat itself, you are now in EPA tampering territory.
- Resonator deletes. Often sold with cat-back kits. Legal federally, but check state noise law.
- O2 sensor location. The downstream O2 sensor lives on or near the cat - not the cat-back section - so a cat-back install does not affect O2 readings.
Best brands for warranty-safe cat-backs
Borla, MagnaFlow, Corsa, AWE, Flowmaster, MBRP, and aFe all manufacture 50-state legal cat-back systems with no emissions impact. Most come with a "limited lifetime" warranty on the piping itself. The OEM warranty is fully intact behind them.
