BMW, Mercedes, and Audi have all moved to a low-viscosity DOT 4 (DOT 4 LV) since the mid-2000s, because traction control and ABS pumps cycle faster with thinner fluid - especially in cold weather. Pentosin Super DOT 4 (matches BMW QC 64 008 0, MB 331.0, VW TL 766-Z) is the most widely available correct fluid. Generic DOT 4 from the parts store is too thick.
🛠 What You'll Need
- Pentosin Super DOT 4 LV brake fluid, 2x 1L bottles (Pentosin DOT 4 LV on Amazon)
- Pressure or vacuum bleeder (Motive 0100 or Mityvac) (Motive pressure bleeder on Amazon)
- 11mm and 7mm flare-nut/brake bleeder wrench set (brake bleeder wrench set on Amazon)
- Clear vinyl tubing, 3/16" ID (clear vinyl tubing on Amazon)
- Catch bottle (brake bleed catch bottle on Amazon)
- Torque wrench 5-40 ft-lb (torque wrench on Amazon)
⚠ When NOT to DIY thisSome German cars require an ABS module bleed via the factory scanner (BMW ISTA, Mercedes XENTRY, VW VCDS) to fully purge the HCU. This applies especially to cars with electronic parking brakes or active stability systems. Without it, you only refresh the lines and calipers, not the ABS module - and old fluid in the module still boils under hard braking.
✅ Before You Start - Checklist
- Park on level, solid ground (no slopes, no soft dirt)
- Vehicle and fluids at the correct temperature for the procedure
- All tools, parts, and scanner on hand BEFORE you begin
- Owner's manual and OEM service procedure nearby for torque specs
- Safety: gloves, eye protection, wheel chocks, jack stands rated for vehicle weight
📝 Step-by-Step Instructions
- Park on a level lift or jack stands, all four wheels offCool car, engine off. Block wheels if not on a lift.
- Remove the reservoir cap and siphon out old fluidUse a turkey baster or syringe. Refill reservoir with fresh DOT 4 LV to MAX line.
- Connect a pressure bleeder to the reservoir15 psi (1 bar). Motive 0100 has the correct German cap adapter.
- Bleed in the correct order: passenger rear, driver rear, passenger front, driver frontFurthest from master cylinder first. Some BMWs reverse the order - check your service manual.
- Crack the passenger rear bleeder valve (7-11mm)Let fluid flow through clear tubing into catch bottle until it runs clear amber with no bubbles. Close bleeder.
- Repeat for driver rear, then passenger front, then driver frontRoughly 250ml per caliper. Monitor reservoir - never let it run dry or you introduce air.
- Torque each bleeder valve to specMost German calipers: 7-11 ft-lb (10-15 Nm). Over-torque snaps the bleeder.
- If equipped with ABS, run the ABS bleed routine via scannerBMW ISTA, Mercedes XENTRY/Star, or VAG-COM/VCDS. Foxwell NT510 supports German ABS bleed routines. Without this step, the HCU still holds old fluid.
- Re-bleed all four calipers after ABS bleedThe ABS bleed cycles fluid back into the lines. A second pass at each corner removes any remaining air.
- Top off reservoir to MAX lineWipe area clean. Reinstall reservoir cap.
- Reinstall wheels, torque to specLug nut spec varies by brand: BMW 100 ft-lb, Mercedes 80-95 ft-lb, Audi 88 ft-lb. Use a real torque wrench, not impact.
- Pump brake pedal to firmBefore driving, pump pedal 10 times. It should feel firm by the third pump. If still spongy, repeat the bleed.
- Test drive at low speed firstVerify pedal feel and no pulling. Make several brake applications from 25 mph.
- Log the serviceDate, mileage, 1-2 liters of DOT 4 LV used. Most German makers specify a 2-year brake fluid change interval.
✅ After You Finish - Verify Checklist
- No tools left in the engine bay or under the car
- All plugs torqued to spec with new crush washers / gaskets
- Test the system worked on (start, drive, monitor for codes)
- Look for leaks or drips after 30 minutes of cool-down
- Record date, mileage, fluid P/N, and quantity in your service log
- Properly dispose of old fluid at an auto parts store recycling center

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is DOT 4 LV brake fluid?
Low-viscosity DOT 4 - thinner than standard DOT 4 so ABS pumps and traction control modulators react faster, especially in cold weather.
What is the correct German brake fluid spec?
BMW QC 64 008 0, Mercedes 331.0, VW/Audi TL 766-Z. Pentosin Super DOT 4 meets all three.
Can I use standard DOT 4 in my BMW?
It will function but ABS response is slower and dry/wet boiling points are typically lower. Use DOT 4 LV.
How often should German DOT 4 LV be changed?
Every 2 years regardless of mileage - BMW, Mercedes, and Audi all specify the same interval. Moisture absorption is the issue.
Do I really need an ABS module bleed?
For a complete refresh, yes. Without it, old fluid remains in the HCU and lowers the boiling point of the entire system under hard braking.
Can I use Motul RBF600 instead?
For track cars yes - it is a higher dry boiling point. For street cars stick with a manufacturer-approved DOT 4 LV like Pentosin Super DOT 4.
