What Is Kia Drive Wise?

Kia Drive Wise is the umbrella name for the ADAS bundle standard on every Kia sold since 2022. The hardware is shared with Hyundai SmartSense and Genesis Active Safety. The current generation includes Highway Driving Assist 2 on top trims, which provides hands-on automated lane changes on mapped highways.

OEM ADAS Suite

📖 The Quick Answer

Kia Drive Wise bundles Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA, which is AEB plus pedestrian, cyclist, and junction-turning detection), Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist (lane centering), Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Safe Exit Assist, Driver Attention Warning, and High Beam Assist. Highway Driving Assist 2 is the hands-on partial-automation feature on Telluride SX Prestige, Carnival SX Prestige, EV6 GT-Line, and EV9 GT-Line.

⚙ How It Works (Sensors and Algorithm)

Hardware is a forward camera behind the windshield, a forward millimeter-wave radar in the lower bumper, two rear corner radars, and ultrasonic sensors. Highway Driving Assist 2 adds two front corner radars. The ADAS ECU fuses inputs and controls throttle, brake, and the column-mounted electric power steering. Hardware and software are shared with Hyundai SmartSense.

🛡 What It Protects Against

Rear-end collisions, lane departures, blind-spot lane changes, reverse cross-traffic, pedestrian and cyclist strikes, and (with FCA junction-turning) intersection T-bones. IIHS rates Telluride, Sorento, Sportage, Forte, K5, EV6, and EV9 with Drive Wise as Top Safety Picks.

⚠ Limitations and When It Fails

The first-generation Drive Wise (2018 to 2020) had a known issue with low-sun camera saturation. Like all camera-based systems, it depends on clear lane paint and a clean windshield. After a windshield replacement, both static and dynamic recalibration are required (Kia TSB SST083). The FCA junction-turning feature is heavily geofenced to certain road geometries and may not activate at all intersections.

🚗 Which Vehicles Have It

Every 2022+ Kia has Drive Wise standard. Lineup includes Forte, K5, Stinger (discontinued 2023), Soul, Seltos, Sportage, Sorento, Telluride, Niro, EV6, EV9, and Carnival. HDA2 is standard on Telluride SX Prestige X-Pro, Carnival SX Prestige, EV6 GT-Line and EV9 GT-Line.

🔧 Related TSBs and Recalls

Recall 22V-678 (shared with Hyundai) covers false AEB activation on certain 2019 to 2021 Kia Telluride and Sorento. TSB SST083 covers front camera recalibration after a windshield replacement.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kia Drive Wise the same as Hyundai SmartSense?
Yes, the hardware and core software are essentially identical. Both share parts numbers and TSB procedures.
Is Drive Wise standard?
Yes on every 2022+ Kia. HDA2 is standard on the top trims of Telluride, Carnival, EV6, and EV9.
Do I need to recalibrate Drive Wise after a windshield replacement?
Yes. Kia requires both a static target-board recalibration and a dynamic drive cycle using GDS or J2534.
Does Drive Wise include hands-free driving?
No. Even HDA2 requires hands on the wheel. Kia has not released a US-market hands-free product yet.
Will Drive Wise work in snow?
Limited. Snow over the camera and front radar disables both. The corner radars also fail when caked with road salt or slush.
Does Drive Wise reduce insurance?
Most insurers offer a small discount on collision premium for vehicles with factory AEB and LKA, which is everything Drive Wise includes.
