💬 VIN Lookup FAQ

What is a VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code that identifies your specific vehicle. Every car built since 1981 has one. It encodes your make, model, year, where it was built, the engine, and a unique serial number.

Where do I find my VIN?

Your VIN appears in several places: the lower-left corner of the windshield (visible from outside), the driver-side door jamb sticker, your vehicle registration, your insurance card, or the title document. It will never contain the letters I, O, or Q (to avoid confusion with 1 and 0).

Are recall repairs really free?

Yes. By federal law, manufacturers must fix any open safety recall at no cost to the vehicle owner, regardless of whether you're the original owner. Just take your VIN to any authorized dealer of your make and they'll perform the repair for free.

What's the difference between a recall and a TSB?

A recall is a mandatory fix for a safety defect, repaired free at any dealer. A Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) is the manufacturer's recommended fix for a known issue that isn't a safety defect - TSBs are usually only free if your car is under warranty.

Is this VIN lookup really free?

Yes, completely free. We use the official NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) public database. No signup, no email, no credit card. Sites that charge for VIN history reports are usually selling Carfax/AutoCheck - those are separate products that include accident and ownership history.
