What P0302 means for your Honda Pilot
Your Pilot threw cyl 2 misfire. On the J35 V6, cyl 2 is bank 1 driver side. Like cyl 1, it's in the front bank - easier to access than the rear (4-5-6). VCM doesn't deactivate cyl 2, but VCM-related oil consumption can still raise the misfire rate across all cylinders. Coil failure is the most common cause.

#1 CAUSE
Cylinder 2 Coil Pack Failure
J35 V6 uses 6 individual COPs. Cyl 2 (front driver, bank 1) is easy to access. OEM coil 30520-R70-S01. Swap-test with coil 4 (rear driver, bank 1) - if P0302 becomes P0304 after a drive cycle, replace coil 2.

#2 CAUSE
Worn Spark Plugs (Set of 6)
Honda specs NGK IZFR6K-11 iridium plugs at 105k miles. ALWAYS replace all 6 - rear bank requires intake plenum removal so labor doubles if you skip them. Gap 0.043".

Oil Consumption from VCM Ring Wear
Pilot VCM deactivates cyls 4, 5, 6 (rear bank). Those cylinders develop ring wear over time, oil consumption climbs over 1 qt/1000 mi, and all cylinders start to misfire intermittently from poor combustion. Cyl 2 can throw P0302 even though it never deactivates. Install an S-VCM Controller to stop the ring wear.

Most Affected Pilot Model Years
| Year | Engine | Primary Cause | Typical Mileage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2009-2015 | 3.5L J35Z V6 + VCM | Coil pack #2 | 90k-160k | Front bank, easy access |
| 2016-2018 | 3.5L J35Y V6 + VCM | Coil + plug | 80k-140k | Install S-VCM Controller |
| 2019-2024 | 3.5L J35Y V6 + VCM | Coil pack #2 | 60k-120k | 9-speed had its own issues |
TSB info: Honda TSB 16-073 (VCM oil consumption testing); third-party S-VCM Controllers are the de-facto fix.
How to Diagnose P0302 on a Honda Pilot
- Check oil level FIRST. Low oil = misfires before anything else. Top off and re-run the code.
- Swap coil 2 with coil 4 (both bank 1, driver side). If P0302 follows the coil to cyl 4, replace coil 2. Front-bank access is 10 minutes.
- If oil consumption is over 1 qt/1000 mi, do a compression test. Cyls 4-5-6 lower than 1-2-3 = VCM ring wear. Install an S-VCM Controller.

P0302 Honda Pilot FAQs
Why is cyl 2 easier to fix than cyl 5 on a Pilot?
Cyl 2 is in the front bank (bank 1, driver side). You can reach it from the top of the engine with no disassembly. Rear-bank cylinders (4, 5, 6) require removing the intake plenum - 2-3 hours of labor.
Does VCM affect cylinder 2?
Cyl 2 doesn't deactivate, but oil burn from rear-bank ring wear lowers compression and fouls plugs across the whole engine. If your Pilot burns over 1 qt/1000 mi, all cylinders are misfire candidates.
How much for P0302 on a Pilot?
Front-bank coil: $110-$200. Full plug set: $240-$480 (intake plenum off). VCM-related repairs: $200 S-VCM bandaid to $4,000 engine refresh.
Should I add a catch can to a J35?
Yes if you're keeping the truck past 150k miles. A quality catch can reduces oil mist on intake valves, helping all cylinders run cleaner - especially the GDI-style port-injection oil-vapor accumulation common on later J35Y engines.
