What P0300 means for your Forester
On the Subaru Forester, P0300 has two very different causes depending on engine. On the EJ25 boxer (2003-2010, parts of 2011-2013), the well-known head gasket failure can leak coolant into a cylinder, causing a misfire that often shows up after the engine is warmed up. On the newer FB25 (2011-2018) and FA20 turbo (XT models), ignition coil-on-plug failure and worn iridium plugs are the more common cause. Subaru issued service bulletin guidance on EJ25 head gaskets and extended coverage on some VINs. If you see white sweet-smelling exhaust steam with the P0300, suspect head gasket immediately.
Top 3 Subaru Forester-Specific Causes of P0300
The single best-known Subaru problem. The composite head gasket between the cylinder head and block degrades and starts leaking coolant externally (most common) or internally into a cylinder (causes the misfire). Internal leak symptoms: P0300, sweet-smelling white exhaust, coolant disappearing without a visible leak, occasional bubbles in the overflow tank. Full head gasket job runs $1,800-$3,000. Subaru extended warranty coverage on certain 2006-2009 Foresters.
On the FB25 (2011+) and FA20 turbo, each cylinder has its own coil-on-plug. Coil failure at 70k-130k miles is the leading cause of FB25 P0300 codes. Swap-test to find the bad coil. NGK OE coils $40-80 each, aftermarket sets $80-160.
Subaru spec is NGK iridium plugs with a 100k interval, but the boxer-engine layout means plugs sit horizontally and tend to oil-foul earlier than inline engines. Replace all 4 together. Labor is higher than other 4-cylinders because the engine sits low and side-access through the wheel well is sometimes needed.
Note: remaining percentage covers low compression, vacuum leaks, MAF issues, and fuel pressure. Hands-on diagnosis required for those.

Is It Safe to Drive Your Forester with P0300?
Short answer: Limit driving and fix it within a week. Unlike P0420, P0300 actively damages other components every mile. Unburned fuel destroys the catalytic converter in weeks. If the check engine light is flashing (not just on), stop driving immediately - that signals active misfire severe enough to damage the converter in real time.
How to Diagnose P0300 on a Subaru Forester
-
Pull freeze-frame data and check service history. Most OBD-II scanners (under $30) show RPM, coolant temp, and load at the moment the code set. If your Forester has 80k+ miles and the plugs have never been replaced, start there.
-
Swap-test coils to find a failing unit. If new plugs do not resolve the misfire, identify which cylinder fired the freeze-frame, swap that coil to another cylinder, and rescan. A coil that follows the misfire is your problem.
-
Check for companion codes. P0300 with P0171 (lean) usually points to a fuel or air metering issue. P0300 with P0011/P0021 (cam timing) suggests timing chain or VVT solenoid. Always fix the root cause - misfires from lean conditions or bad cam timing will return.

Subaru Forester P0300 - Frequently Asked Questions
How do I tell if my Forester P0300 is the head gasket or something simpler?
Look for sweet-smelling white exhaust, mystery coolant loss, or pressure in the overflow tank. A combustion-gas test on the coolant (block tester, ~$80) confirms an internal head gasket leak. If those checks are clean, it is almost certainly coils or plugs - far cheaper to fix.
Are Subaru head gaskets covered under warranty extension?
Subaru did extend warranty coverage on certain 2006-2009 Forester (and other EJ25) VINs - the extension was 8-year/100,000-mile coverage for external leaks. Internal leaks causing misfires were sometimes covered as well. Call a Subaru dealer with the VIN to check.
How much does it cost to fix P0300 on a Subaru Forester?
Coil + plug job: $150-$400. Head gasket job (EJ25): $1,800-$3,000. Walnut intake cleaning on FA20 turbo: $400-$800. Get an AI diagnosis at /diagnose before spending dealer money.
Is it safe to drive a Subaru Forester with P0300?
If the cause is head gasket - no, you risk overheating, warping the heads, and total engine loss. Tow it. If the cause is coil/plug, light driving for a week is okay but not longer. Flashing CEL means stop immediately.
