📖 What It Does
Opens at the right moments so that vapors trapped in the charcoal canister get pulled into the intake and burned. Closes at other times so vapors stay stored and the EVAP system can leak-test itself.
⚙ How It Works
The ECU pulses 12V to the purge valve coil based on engine load, temperature, and fuel trim conditions. When energized, the valve opens; manifold vacuum pulls vapors from the canister through the valve and into the intake manifold.
⚠ Symptoms When It Fails
Symptoms include rough idle (when stuck open), gas smell, P0441/P0443/P0444/P0496 codes, and check engine light. Stuck-open is more common than stuck-closed. See full symptom guide.
💰 Replacement Cost
Replacement: $150–$300. Valve is $30–$100. Labor is 30–60 minutes on most cars. Easy DIY for the mechanically inclined. See purge valve cost.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive with a bad purge valve?
Short term yes. Drivability suffers if it sticks open. Fix within a few weeks.
Why does my car idle rough only sometimes?
A purge valve that intermittently sticks open creates a vacuum leak only when commanded open.
How long does a purge valve last?
60,000–150,000 miles. They are inexpensive consumables on most vehicles.
Will premium gas help a bad purge valve?
No. Purge valve failure is mechanical/electrical, not fuel-related.
Can I clean a purge valve?
Sometimes - carb cleaner through the ports may restore one, but replacement is usually a better bet.
How do I test the purge valve?
Apply 12V and vacuum simultaneously. The valve should open and pass air. With no power, it must hold vacuum.
