Short idling - up to a couple of minutes - is fine and sometimes necessary (warm-up at sub-freezing temps, waiting in a pickup line). But idling for 10+ minutes routinely is bad: it wastes about 0.2 gallons of fuel per hour, runs the engine rich which dilutes oil and fouls plugs, and on modern cars provides zero benefit because they're designed to be driven as soon as oil pressure stabilizes (about 30 seconds).

Fuel waste and emissions
Idling burns roughly 0.2–0.5 gallons per hour depending on engine size. The EPA estimates Americans waste 6 billion gallons annually to idling.

Fuel dilution of oil
At idle the engine runs rich. Unburned fuel slips past piston rings and contaminates the oil, reducing its viscosity and shortening its life.

Spark plug fouling
Long idle keeps combustion temperatures low. Carbon and fuel deposits build on spark plug tips, causing misfires and rough running until the engine is driven hard.

Catalytic converter cool-down
Cats need 800°F+ to work efficiently. Extended idling can drop catalyst temperature below light-off, causing higher tailpipe emissions and slow code-readiness recovery.

Cylinder wall wash
Rich-mixture idle washes the protective oil film off cylinder walls. Restart-and-drive cycles cause more piston ring wear than steady operation.

Diesels and turbocharged gas engines especially hate long idle. DPFs can clog from incomplete regeneration; turbos accumulate carbon on the cold side.

Is it bad to idle in the driveway to warm up?
In cold weather, 30–60 seconds is enough on modern fuel-injected cars. After that, drive gently - the engine warms 3x faster under load.
Does idling damage the catalytic converter?
Long idle drops cat temperature below efficient operation. Occasional idle is fine, but daily 20-minute idles will accelerate cat efficiency loss.
Is idling with AC on bad?
It loads the engine slightly, which is actually helpful - it raises combustion temperatures and reduces the cylinder-wash issue compared to no-load idle.
What about remote starters?
Fine for short pre-conditioning (5 minutes). If yours runs longer, set it to the minimum. Diesel trucks should avoid long remote idles especially.
Will idling drain the battery?
No - the alternator charges the battery at idle on virtually all modern cars. It does waste fuel, though.
Is hybrid idling different?
Hybrids shut the engine off at idle automatically. You don't need to worry about idling damage in a hybrid unless the gas engine is running for cabin heat in winter.
