Most halogen headlight bulbs last 500-1,000 hours of use. When one burns out, replace BOTH sides - the other is close to failing too, and matched bulbs give even color/brightness.
🛠 What You'll Need
- Correct headlight bulb (Sylvania halogen headlight bulbs on Amazon)
- LED upgrade kit, optional (LED headlight conversion on Amazon)
- Latex or nitrile gloves (must not touch bulb glass with bare hands) (nitrile gloves on Amazon)
- Flashlight
- Phillips screwdriver (some cars require removing battery or grille for access)
⚠ When NOT to DIY thisNever touch a halogen bulb's glass with bare fingers. Skin oil creates a hot spot when the bulb heats up and shatters the glass (and ruins the bulb). Always wear gloves or hold the bulb by the metal base.
✅ Before You Start - Checklist
- Park on level, solid ground (no slopes, no soft dirt)
- Engine is at the correct temperature (cold or warm as specified)
- All tools and parts on hand BEFORE you begin
- Owner's manual nearby for torque specs and locations
- Safety: gloves, eye protection if needed, hood propped open
📝 Step-by-Step Instructions
- Identify the correct bulb sizeCheck the owner's manual or look at the back of the existing bulb (markings like H7, H11, 9006, 9012). Auto parts stores look up by year/make/model.
- Open the hood and locate the back of the headlight assemblyThe headlight assembly has a clear plastic lens facing forward and a black plastic housing facing the engine bay. The bulb screws into the back.
- Remove the dust cover, if equippedSome headlights have a rubber or plastic dust cap on the back of the housing. Pull/twist it off to expose the bulb base.
- Unplug the wire harness from the bulbA plastic connector with 2-3 wires plugs onto the bulb base. Press the release tab and pull straight off. Do not pull on the wires.
- Twist out the bulbMost halogen bulbs twist 1/4 turn counter-clockwise to release. Some have a metal clip to flip. Pull the bulb straight out - don't yank.
- Put on gloves before handling the new bulbOil from skin contaminates the glass and the bulb fails early or shatters when heated.
- Insert the new bulb the same way the old one came outHold by the metal base. Insert into the housing, align the tabs, twist 1/4 turn clockwise to lock. Check it is fully seated - wiggling = not locked.
- Reconnect the wire harnessPush the connector onto the bulb base until it clicks. Tug gently to confirm.
- Replace the dust coverSnap or twist the cover back into place. Missing dust covers let moisture into the housing - yellowing, fogging.
- Test the new bulbTurn on headlights. Check both low and high beams. If new bulb does not work, double-check the connector is fully seated. If still dead, the issue may be a blown fuse or relay.
- Repeat on the other sideStrongly recommended - matched bulbs give even brightness and the other is close to failing too.
- Aim the headlights if you noticed misaimPark 25 ft from a wall. The brightest part of the low beam should be at or slightly below the height of the bulb on the wall. Adjusters are small screws on top/side of the housing.
✅ After You Finish - Verify Checklist
- No tools left in the engine bay or under the car
- Test the system you worked on (start, drive, check, etc.)
- Look for leaks or drips after 5 minutes of running
- Record the date and mileage in your service log
- Recycle or properly dispose of any old parts/fluids

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How long do halogen headlight bulbs last?
500-1,000 hours, or roughly 2-4 years of normal driving. LED bulbs last 20,000+ hours.
Can I upgrade from halogen to LED?
Yes, with a plug-and-play LED kit ($30-100). Some cars require a CANBus decoder to avoid "bulb out" warnings. Make sure it's legal in your state (some are HID-only).
Why does my new bulb keep burning out?
Either you touched the glass (oils), the housing has moisture inside (fogging), or there is a voltage spike (failing voltage regulator or ground).
How do I aim headlights after replacing?
Park 25 ft from a wall, mark the bulb height on the wall with tape. Adjust with the small screws on the housing until brightest part of low beam is at or below the mark.
Should I replace both bulbs at once?
Yes. Matched pairs give equal brightness/color, and the other bulb is likely near end of life. Saves a second job in 6 months.
My headlights look yellow/dim with new bulbs - why?
The plastic housing is oxidized. Restore with a headlight restoration kit ($10) - sand and polish to clear the lens.
