Peeling clear coat is UV damage that has destroyed the bond between the clear layer and the color layer. There is no chemical or polish that re-bonds them - the failed clear has to be sanded off and replaced. This is the hardest DIY paint repair, and the limit before you should consider professional repaint.
🛠 Tools & Products You'll Need
- Random orbital sander - faster than hand sanding
- Painter's tape and masking paper
- Tack cloth
- Respirator with organic vapor cartridges - mandatory for aerosol clear
- Wet/dry sandpaper 400, 800, 1500, 2000 grit
- Self-etching primer (only if you sand through color)
- Color-matched basecoat aerosol
- Spraymax 2K aerosol clear coat
- Rubbing compound and polish

⚠ When NOT to DIY thisIf more than 30 percent of a panel is peeling, or if peeling crosses to two or more panels (hood + roof + trunk), DIY makes it look worse not better. Professional repaint of one panel runs $400–$800 - and a full car repaint is $2,500–$5,000. For severe cases, this is the right call.
📝 Step-by-Step Instructions
- Assess the extent before startingMark every peeling area with painter's tape. If less than 30 percent of one or two panels, DIY is realistic. More than that - get 2–3 body shop quotes first.
- Wash and clay the panel thoroughlyRemove all wax and contaminants. Paint will not stick to wax residue. Wipe down with isopropyl alcohol after washing.
- Sand off the peeling clear coat with 400 gritWet-sand the entire failed area, feathering 1–2 inches into the surrounding good clear. Goal: smooth transition with no peeling edges. Keep checking - the moment you see color come up, switch to 800 grit.
- Refine with 800 then 1500 gritUse lighter pressure on each finer grit. By 1500 the surface should be uniformly matte and feel like a smooth eggshell.
- Tape and mask everything you don't want paintedCover trim, glass, lights, and adjacent panels with masking paper. Aerosol overspray drifts 10–15 feet on a still day.
- Apply basecoat if you sanded through to primerLight, even coats from 10–12 inches away. Three to four coats with 10 minutes between each. Don't worry about gloss - basecoat is supposed to look flat.
- Apply Spraymax 2K clear coatActivate the can by pressing the button on the bottom, then shake 2 minutes. Apply 3 medium coats with 10 minutes flash time between each. Working temperature 65–85F, humidity below 70 percent.
- Let cure 24–48 hours undisturbedPark in a clean garage. Dust on wet clear coat is a nightmare to fix.
- Wet-sand the cured clear with 2000 gritOptional but recommended. Knocks down any orange peel texture and prepares for compound.
- Compound and polish to final glossUse cutting compound on a foam pad, then polish. The repaired area should be indistinguishable from factory paint at 5 feet.
💡 Before & After Tips
Test on the trunk or under a panelIf this is your first aerosol paint job, practice on something hidden. The technique is more art than science and the first panel is always the worst.
Never spray in direct sunlightSolar gain dries the paint before it can lay flat, creating heavy orange peel. Shade or indoors only.
Buy two cans of Spraymax 2KOnce activated, the can is good for 24 hours and that's it. If your panel is bigger than a hood section, you will run out mid-coat.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my clear coat peeling?
Almost always UV damage to a factory single-stage clear from 2000–2015 era cars. Some recalls and TSBs cover it - check your VIN with the manufacturer.
Can I just polish out the peeling area?
No. Polishing fails because the peeling clear is delaminating from the base layer. It will keep peeling under any new wax or polish you apply.
How long does an aerosol clear coat repair last?
Spraymax 2K is a real 2-part urethane clear - same chemistry as a body shop spray gun. Expect 5–10 years if applied right.
Is there a "clear coat repair pen" that works?
No. Pens cover a chip, not a delaminating panel. Anyone selling a "fix peeling clear coat in 10 minutes" product is selling polish that will look fine for 2 weeks.
How much does a body shop charge to fix peeling clear coat?
Per panel: hood $400–$800, roof $500–$1,000, full car $2,500–$5,000. They sand, prime, base, clear, and color-sand the same way you would, just with a spray booth.
Will my insurance cover peeling clear coat?
Almost never. Clear coat failure is classified as "wear and tear" not damage. The exception: an active manufacturer recall or TSB on your specific VIN.
