Toyota ATF WS (World Standard) is used in nearly every Toyota and Lexus 6-speed and 8-speed automatic since 2005 (Camry, Highlander, Sienna, RAV4, IS, ES, GS, GX460). It has no dipstick. The transmission has an internal standpipe that sets the level when the fluid is between 113-122 F (45-50 C).
🛠 What You'll Need
- Toyota Genuine ATF WS, P/N 00289-ATFWS, 4-5 quarts (Toyota ATF WS on Amazon)
- OBD2 scanner with Toyota ATF temp PID, e.g., Techstream-capable (OBDLink MX+ on Amazon)
- New refill plug gasket, P/N 35178-30010 (Toyota crush washers on Amazon)
- 24mm socket for overflow plug, 6mm hex for refill plug (hex/socket set on Amazon)
- Fluid transfer pump (fluid transfer pump on Amazon)
- Torque wrench 10-150 ft-lb (torque wrench on Amazon)
⚠ When NOT to DIY thisWrong fluid temperature equals wrong fluid level. Dealer technicians use Techstream to monitor ATF temp. Using a generic scanner without the Toyota ATF temp PID means you are guessing - and a half quart low can burn the torque converter clutch within 500 miles. If your scanner does not show the live PID, take it to a Toyota specialist.
✅ Before You Start - Checklist
- Park on level, solid ground (no slopes, no soft dirt)
- Vehicle and fluids at the correct temperature for the procedure
- All tools, parts, and scanner on hand BEFORE you begin
- Owner's manual and OEM service procedure nearby for torque specs
- Safety: gloves, eye protection, wheel chocks, jack stands rated for vehicle weight
📝 Step-by-Step Instructions
- Drive 5-10 miles to warm the transmission to about 100 FThen park on a level lift. The car must be perfectly level for the standpipe overflow to work.
- Locate the overflow plug (24mm) on the bottom of the panIt is the larger plug. The smaller 6mm hex plug above or beside it is the FILL/REFILL plug.
- Remove the refill plug FIRSTAlways crack the refill plug first to confirm it is not seized. If you cannot get the refill plug out, do not drain - you will be stranded with an empty transmission.
- Place pan, then remove the overflow plugDrain 4-4.5 quarts. Inspect old fluid - brown is normal at 60K, black or smelling burnt means valve body trouble.
- Reinstall the overflow plug with new gasketTorque to 15 ft-lb (20 Nm). The overflow plug has a standpipe inside it that sets the level.
- Pump fresh WS through the refill holeAdd the same amount you drained (4-4.5 qt). Use the transfer pump to push fluid uphill into the refill port.
- Start engine, cycle shifter P-R-N-DFoot on brake, idle, hold each gear 5 seconds. Circulates fluid through the torque converter and valve body.
- Monitor ATF temperature with scannerWait until ATF temp climbs into 113-122 F (45-50 C) window. Do NOT exceed 122 F or the level check is invalid.
- Crack the overflow plug with engine runningAt the correct temp, with engine idling in Park, loosen the overflow plug. A pencil-thin steady stream means level is correct.
- If only drips come out, add more fluidThrough the refill hole, add 4-oz at a time until a thin stream appears at the overflow.
- Reinstall overflow plug at 15 ft-lb (20 Nm)New gasket each time. Snug, do not over-torque.
- Reinstall refill plug at 29 ft-lb (39 Nm)Use a new gasket. This plug is on the side of the case.
- Test drive 10-15 minutesVerify smooth shifts. Recheck for leaks at the plugs after cool-down.
- Log the serviceRecord date, mileage, and quarts used. Severe service interval is 60,000 miles.
✅ After You Finish - Verify Checklist
- No tools left in the engine bay or under the car
- All plugs torqued to spec with new crush washers / gaskets
- Test the system worked on (start, drive, monitor for codes)
- Look for leaks or drips after 30 minutes of cool-down
- Record date, mileage, fluid P/N, and quantity in your service log
- Properly dispose of old fluid at an auto parts store recycling center

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is Toyota ATF WS made of?
It is a low-viscosity synthetic ATF with a specific friction modifier package for the Aisin 6-speed and 8-speed automatics. P/N 00289-ATFWS.
Can I use Valvoline MaxLife or aftermarket ATF in WS applications?
It will work briefly but the friction modifier is wrong. Shift quality degrades and Toyota will deny warranty claims if non-WS fluid is found. Use genuine ATF WS.
Does my Toyota have a dipstick?
No, all WS-spec transmissions since 2005 have no dipstick. Level is set by an internal standpipe and a temperature-based overflow check.
How much fluid does a drain and fill take?
4 to 4.5 quarts for a pan drop, depending on model. A full flush is 8 to 12 quarts.
What temperature for the WS fill check?
113 to 122 F (45 to 50 C). Outside this window the level is wrong.
Is the Toyota WS transmission really lifetime fluid?
No. Toyota sells the fluid by the case to its dealers for a reason. 60,000 miles is the practical service interval, especially with towing.
