Use whichever comes first, miles or time. Severe service (short trips, towing, dust, extreme heat or cold) shortens the safe interval by 25–50%.
🧠 Why This Interval Matters
Worn tires lose grip, hydroplane in rain, and significantly increase stopping distance. Even with tread, rubber over 6 years old hardens and cracks, the sidewalls can blow at highway speed.
⚠ Signs You're Overdue
- Tread depth under 4/32" (use the quarter test)
- Visible wear bars flush with tread
- Sidewall cracks or dry rot lines
- Bulges or bubbles on sidewalls
- Manufacturing date code (DOT) over 6 years old
What happens if you skip itHigh. Bald or aged tires cause blowouts, hydroplaning, and dramatically longer stopping distances.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check tread depth?
Stick a quarter upside-down in the groove. If you can see all of Washington's head, you have less than 4/32" left. The penny test (Lincoln's head) is more lenient and not recommended for wet roads.
Where do I find the tire date code?
Look for a 4-digit DOT code on the sidewall. 3221 means week 32 of 2021. Tires over 6 years old should be replaced regardless of tread.
Do I have to replace all 4 at once?
On AWD cars, yes, mismatched diameters damage the differential. On FWD or RWD, you can replace in pairs (always same axle).
How long do tires last in storage?
Unmounted and out of sunlight, 6–10 years. Once mounted and loaded, they start aging from heat and flexing immediately.
Are off-brand tires safe?
Tier-three tires meet DOT minimums but have shorter tread life and weaker wet grip. For daily drivers, mid-tier name brands (Falken, Hankook, Yokohama) are excellent value.
Do I need an alignment with new tires?
Recommended. New tires can show alignment problems immediately, and an alignment protects your investment.
