Yes - some fuel additives work. PEA-based cleaners (Chevron Techron, BG 44K, Gumout Regane) have peer-reviewed evidence of cleaning fuel injectors. "Octane boosters" and "MPG magic" additives almost universally do not.
What actually works
- Polyetheramine (PEA) cleaners: Techron, BG 44K, Gumout Regane Complete. SAE paper 2007-01-4071 documented intake-valve and injector deposit removal with PEA over 5,000-mile cycles. Top Tier gasoline standards require PEA-class additive packages.
- Diesel cetane boosters with 2-EHN: Stanadyne Performance, Hot Shot Diesel Extreme. Genuine ignition-quality improvements.
- Water-removers (HEET, Iso-Heet): Methanol or isopropanol bonds with water. Real chemistry, useful for cold climates.
What does not work (or only marginally)
- Octane boosters (Royal Purple Max-Boost, NOS, Lucas): Most raise octane by 0.1-0.3 points per bottle. Going from 87 to 93 needs nearly impossible additive concentration. Better to just buy higher-octane fuel.
- "MPG boosters" (Acetone, naphthalene, pill-in-tank devices): No peer-reviewed studies show MPG gains. EPA has investigated and rejected dozens since the 1970s.
- "Mileage maximizer" magnets and fuel-line gadgets: Outright pseudoscience. Fuel is not magnetic.
When to use a PEA cleaner
- Every 5,000-10,000 milesOne full bottle of Techron Concentrate Plus or BG 44K into a near-empty tank, then fill with regular fuel.
- Before a long highway tripThe sustained higher-temperature driving helps the additive work through the injector circuit.
- If you have a misfire from carbon buildup (DI engines)PEA helps with port-injected systems. Direct-injection engines have less help from in-tank cleaners because fuel bypasses intake valves entirely - walnut blasting is the real fix.
- After buying a used carYou do not know its fuel history. A full bottle resets injector cleanliness.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is Techron worth it?
Yes - among the most documented and effective PEA cleaners on the market. One bottle every 5-10k miles is a reasonable cadence.
Does Lucas Fuel Treatment work?
Mixed evidence. Contains some PEA but at lower concentration than Techron or BG 44K. Marginal real-world impact.
Will an additive fix my P0420 code?
Rarely. P0420 is a catalyst efficiency code. Cleaners target injectors and intake valves, not the cat.
Can I use Sea Foam in the gas tank?
It is mostly mineral spirits and IPA. Some cleaning effect but inferior to PEA-based products for injector cleaning.
Do "boutique" gas brands like Shell V-Power work?
Yes - Top Tier brands (Shell, Chevron, Costco, Mobil, Sunoco) carry higher PEA concentrations than non-Top Tier. AAA study (2016) confirmed reduced engine deposits.
How much does a $10 bottle of additive actually improve MPG?
Realistically 0-1%. The injector cleaning has long-term benefits for power and emissions, but immediate MPG impact is small.
