A lift kit does not automatically void your warranty under Magnuson-Moss, but it does create real exposure on driveline, suspension, steering, and tire-wear claims. The bigger the lift, the bigger the risk.
The Magnuson-Moss rule, applied to lifts
The federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act says the manufacturer must prove your aftermarket lift caused the specific failure. With a lift kit, that is easier than with most mods because lifts change driveline angles, control arm geometry, CV axle plunge, and tire scrub - all common failure points.
What typically stays covered
- Powertrain (engine, transmission) - unrelated to lift
- HVAC, infotainment, electronics
- Paint and corrosion
- Brakes (unless you swapped calipers)
What typically gets denied
- CV axles and U-joints (driveline angle increase)
- Wheel bearings (tire offset + bigger tires)
- Ball joints and tie rods (geometry change)
- Track bars, steering boxes (death wobble claims on solid-axle trucks)
- Premature tire wear (alignment outside spec)
How to keep warranty intact
- Stay 2 inches or underMost factory CV angles tolerate 2" without supplemental drop brackets. Above that, you need a long-arm kit or differential drop.
- Use factory-blessed kits where possibleFord Performance, Mopar Direct Connection, GM Performance, and Toyota TRD all sell suspension kits that are warranty-explicit.
- Get a 4-wheel alignment after the liftKeep the alignment receipt. It proves you addressed geometry.
- Document any preexisting issuesPhotos and dealer-service receipts from before the lift. Critical if you ever need to argue causation.
- Avoid combining lift + bigger tires + lockersEach stacks driveline stress. One mod is defensible. Three is a denial cake-walk for the dealer.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is a leveling kit safer than a full lift?
Yes. A 1-2" front leveling kit only changes front geometry and stays within most factory tolerances.
Will Ford warranty my Raptor with a lift?
Ford explicitly allows Ford Performance lift kits. Third-party lifts follow Magnuson-Moss like any other vehicle.
Does a body lift have the same warranty issue as a suspension lift?
No. Body lifts do not change suspension or driveline geometry. They mostly affect bumper height and steering shaft length.
Will bigger tires alone void warranty?
No, but they accelerate wear on wheel bearings, CV axles, and brakes. Those wear-related repairs may be denied.
What about leaf spring add-a-leaf kits?
Minimal warranty risk. Affects ride height by under 2" and does not change driveline angles much.
Can I lift a leased vehicle?
Read your lease carefully. Most lease agreements prohibit modifications and you will be charged at turn-in to return to stock.
