📋 Quick Snapshot
The RAV4 at 60,000 mi finally needs real fluid work. Toyota calls for transmission fluid drain-and-fill, AWD rear differential fluid, brake fluid, and a brake job is often due. This is also where the original-equipment Denso battery typically gives up. Get this service right and the RAV4 cruises to 200K without drama.
✅ Essential at 60,000 miles (Toyota/Honda OEM schedule)
These are the items on the manufacturer service schedule at this milestone. Skip nothing here.
- Engine oil + filter. 0W-16 (2019+) or 0W-20 (pre-2019). Same as 30K.
- Transmission fluid drain-and-fill (Toyota WS). RAV4 8-speed UB80 takes Toyota WS fluid only. Drain-and-fill, not a flush. Do this even though many dealers will tell you "the trans is lifetime."
- AWD rear differential fluid. Toyota 75W-85 GL-5 per spec. AWD models only.
- Brake fluid flush. Every 3 years per Toyota. Most RAV4s are well past this at 60K.
- Coolant (Toyota SLLC pink). Initial coolant is good to 100,000 mi, but if you bought used and history is unclear, do it now.
- Brake pads (front). RAV4 front pads typically need replacement between 50,000 and 70,000 mi.
- Cabin and engine air filters. Both due again.
- Spark plugs (some RAV4 Hybrid). Hybrid 2.5L Atkinson-cycle plugs sometimes need attention earlier than 100K.
🔬 Toyota RAV4-Specific Items at 60,000 miles
Items specific to the Toyota RAV4 platform that generic service schedules miss.
- RAV4 Hybrid inverter coolant. Toyota calls for inverter coolant on the hybrid at 100K initial, but if you tow or live somewhere hot, inspect level and condition now.
- RAV4 AWD differential is GL-5 gear oil. Use Toyota 75W-85 LV or a quality 75W-85 GL-5. Do not use ATF, do not use 75W-90.
- Toyota WS is the only ATF for the UB80 8-speed. No substitutes. Dexron VI, Mercon LV, and universal multi-vehicle ATFs all cause shifting issues on this transmission.
- Battery test at 60K. OE Denso batteries typically fail between 50K and 75K. Have it load-tested. Replacement before failure avoids a no-start in a parking lot.

- Transmission flush. Toyota recommends drain-and-fill on the UB80, not a flush.
- Fuel system cleaning service. A bottle of Techron is the same chemistry.
- Coolant flush at 60K. Toyota SLLC is good to 100K initial. Skip.
- Engine flush. Never appropriate on a modern Toyota.
- Power steering fluid. RAV4 uses electric power steering, there is no fluid.
