The Toyota RAV4 shares much of its engine strategy with the Camry, so its oil requirements are simple and consistent. Most modern RAV4s, including the hybrid, use 0W-20 full synthetic in the 2.5L four-cylinder. Here is the breakdown by engine and year with a DIY note.
| Engine / Years | Oil type | Capacity | Interval |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cyl 2019-2025 | 0W-20 synthetic | 4.6-4.8 qt | 10,000 mi |
| 2.5L Hybrid 2016-2025 | 0W-20 synthetic | 4.4-4.6 qt | 10,000 mi |
| 2.5L 4-cyl 2013-2018 | 0W-20 synthetic | 4.6 qt | 10,000 mi |
| 2.4L 4-cyl 2006-2012 | 5W-30 | 4.5 qt | 5,000 mi |
Toyota specifies 0W-20 full synthetic for the 2.5L four-cylinder found in the 2019 and newer RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid. The prior generation's 2.5L also used 0W-20. Look for oil meeting API SP and ILSAC GF-6.
Older RAV4 models from the mid-2000s and earlier often used 5W-30, so verify the grade if you have an older vehicle.
The 2.5L four-cylinder holds about 4.6 to 4.8 quarts with a filter change. Add most of the oil, run the engine briefly, then top up to the middle of the dipstick range to avoid overfilling.
The RAV4 uses a cartridge-style oil filter accessed from underneath. You need 0W-20 synthetic, the correct cartridge filter and O-rings, a drain-plug wrench, and a crush washer. Reset the maintenance reminder through the instrument-cluster menu after each change.
