12 Shop Overcharges (and How to Push Back)

"You need all 4 brake rotors replaced."
Your rotors are warped, all four need to go. That'll be $800.
Rotors don't all wear evenly. Fronts do 60-70% of braking. Rears often last 2x as long.
Push backAsk: "Can you measure each rotor with a micrometer and show me the spec minimum? I only want to replace what's below spec."

"Brake pads with rotor resurfacing."
Just pads and a resurface, $400.
Modern rotors are usually thinner than the resurface minimum. Resurfacing failures crack rotors weeks later. New rotors ($40 OEM) are often cheaper than labor to resurface.
Push back"What's the minimum thickness spec for these rotors after machining? Are we within that?"

"You need a full flush, not a drain-and-fill."
Your transmission/coolant/brake fluid needs a complete machine flush, $250.
For maintenance, a drain-and-fill at proper intervals is what manufacturers spec. Machine flushes can dislodge debris and cause issues in transmissions over 100k miles.
Push back"My owner's manual specs a fluid exchange, not a flush. Can you do a drain-and-fill instead?"

"Your timing belt is due RIGHT NOW."
You're at 96,000 miles, timing belt service is $1,200, do it now.
Most modern engines use timing CHAINS that never need replacement. Only specific engines use belts (Honda V6, some Subarus, some older Toyotas). Check your owner's manual.
Push back"What's the service interval per the manufacturer? Is this a belt or a chain in my engine?"

"Air filter and cabin filter are filthy."
Both filters are filthy, $90 each installed.
Air filters are $15 at AutoZone and 5-minute DIY. Cabin filter the same. Shops mark up 5-7x for 10 minutes of "labor."
Push back"I'll replace those myself, thanks." Then YouTube your make/model — usually 2 clips and a slide.

"You need an alignment after this work."
After replacing tie rods, you need an alignment, $130.
Alignment after suspension work is legitimate. But shops often add it after work that doesn't require it (brake jobs, shocks, tires only without suspension changes).
Push back"Did the work I requested change toe, camber, or caster? If only one, can we do a partial alignment?"

"Your serpentine belt looks cracked."
Surface cracks on the belt, replace it now for $180.
Modern EPDM belts develop surface cracks but last 100k+ miles. Replace at 90-100k regardless. Don't replace at 40k because of cosmetic cracks.
Push back"What's the manufacturer interval? Can you measure rib depth instead of just looking at cracks?"

"Your spark plugs are at 80k miles."
Spark plugs are due, $400 for parts and labor on your V6.
Modern iridium plugs spec out at 100k-120k miles. Some platinum plugs at 60k. Check spec FIRST. Cheap copper plugs (only on very old cars) need 30k swaps.

"Power steering fluid flush."
Your power steering fluid is dark, needs a flush, $180.
Many modern cars use electric power steering (NO fluid). Hydraulic systems often only need fluid changes if there's a leak/contamination. Most manufacturers don't spec scheduled flushes.
Push back"Does my car even have hydraulic power steering? Is a flush in the service schedule?"

"OEM part required by manufacturer."
We have to use the OEM part, $340 for that water pump.
OEM is the SAME part most aftermarket sources sell (Aisin, NTN, Bosch) — just in a manufacturer-branded box at 2x the price. AC Delco, Motorcraft, Mopar are OEM but ~30% less from RockAuto.
Push back"I'd like to source the OEM part myself from RockAuto — what's the part number?"

"You should replace the whole assembly."
The blower motor's failing, easier to replace the whole HVAC box assembly, $1,400.
Shops upsell assemblies when a single component is replaceable. Blower motors, fuel pumps, AC condensers, and headlight assemblies are commonly replaced when only one part has failed.
Push back"Can you isolate the failed component and replace just that? I'll take the labor hit."

"Diagnostic fee of $150."
Diagnostic charge is $150 before we can even look at it.
A code scan is free at AutoZone. Live data scans are 15 min of work. $150 for "diagnostic" is fair for complex electrical/no-start issues — but routine code reads shouldn't cost that.
Push back"What does the diagnostic involve? I already have the codes from AutoZone — what's the cost to test the specific suspect parts?"
