⚙️ How It Works

How a Wheel Speed Sensor Works

A wheel speed sensor watches how fast each wheel is turning and sends that data to the antilock brake and stability control systems. When one wheel slows suddenly during braking, the ABS uses this signal to release and reapply that brake so the wheel does not lock up. The same signal feeds traction and stability control.

🔧 How It Works, Step by Step

1
Track a toothed ring
A tone ring or magnetic encoder ring spins with the wheel hub, passing the sensor tip.
2
Generate a signal
As each tooth passes, the sensor produces a pulse. Passive sensors make their own voltage, while active sensors switch a supplied voltage.
3
Measure the frequency
The faster the wheel spins, the more pulses per second. The ABS module reads this frequency as wheel speed.
4
Feed the safety systems
The module compares all four wheel speeds to detect lockup, wheel spin, or a skid and reacts through the brakes.

🧩 The Key Parts

Sensor head
Detects the passing teeth of the tone ring and generates the speed pulses.
Tone or encoder ring
The toothed or magnetic ring on the hub that the sensor reads.
Wiring harness
Carries the signal to the ABS module through a flexible route near the suspension.
Mounting bracket
Holds the sensor at a precise air gap from the ring.

🩺 Signs of a Failing Wheel Speed Sensor

⚠️ Common Problems

Debris in the air gap
Metal filings or road grime cling to the magnetic tip and distort the signal.
Damaged tone ring
A cracked or rusted tone ring produces missing pulses that look like a wheel locking.
Broken wiring
The harness flexes with the suspension and can crack or corrode, dropping the signal.

❓ FAQ

Can I drive with a bad wheel speed sensor?
The vehicle still brakes, but ABS, traction, and stability control may be disabled, so drive carefully and repair it soon.
Why does one bad sensor disable all of ABS?
The module needs all four speeds to compare. Losing one usually forces the system into a fail-safe that turns ABS off.
What code points to a wheel speed sensor?
Chassis codes such as C0035 through C0050 identify which wheel sensor circuit has a fault.
